Our projects

ADFM is actively involved in awareness, training, and advocacy efforts across 4 regions in Mauritania - Nouakchott, Brakna, Gorgol, and Guidimakha. Through close collaboration with diverse civil society organizations, local authorities, and youth groups, ADFM ensures the creation of initiatives customized to address the unique challenges of women's rights at the local level, considering cultural intricacies and regional issues. ADFM receives support from two generous grantmakers :

October 2022 to February 2023

Strengthening women's rights in Mauritania through the establishment of awareness committees to fight against female genital mutilation and force-feeding

Funded by : Canadian Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI)

The project's goal is to reduce the prevalence of violence against women in Mauritania through the establishment of awareness committees. This interregional campaign was implemented in Brakna, Gorgol, and Guidimakha— three regions severely affected by gender-based violence. In every region, residents from three cities or villages actively participated in surveys addressing the prevalence of force-feeding and female genital mutilation (FGM) within their communities. Following the workshops, an awareness committee was formed in each city/village, allowing ADFM to sustain ongoing communication with the communities. This initiative also equipped them to persist in their awareness efforts beyond the completion of the project.

Strengthening women's rights in Mauritania through the creation of multilingual awareness videos to fight against gender-based violence

Funded by : Canadian Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI)

The project aims to develop digital and multilingual awareness tools tailored to different Mauritanian communities. We have created five educational videos addressing female genital mutilation and force-feeding (both modern and traditional practices). These videos are translated into the 5 languages spoken by our beneficiaries: French, Pulaar, Wolof, Hassanya, and Soninké. This project seeks to encourage local initiatives that work to reduce violence against women and young girls in Mauritania. By creating accessible digital tools, we aim to raise awareness among a larger audience and promote positive change within Mauritanian society.

Establishment of school committees to fight against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and various forms of force-feeding practices in Mauritania

Funded by : AmplifyChange

The main objective of the project is to contribute to the reduction of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and force-feeding in Mauritania. Our goal is to increase the participation of students, both girls and boys, in 12 schools, fostering their engagement to fights against these harmful practices. This involves raising awareness among students regarding the challenges and repercussions associated with FGM and force-feeding. We intend to form 12 school committees involved in continuous awareness efforts. We will also conduct two comprehensive workshops addressing Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and force-feeding. These initiatives will be supported through the creation of awareness tools, including posters, an awareness kit, aids, etc. In the second year, we will conduct two workshops aimed at strengthening the capacities of the school committees.
