SCHOOL COMMITTEES

The objective of this initiative is to establish 12 school committees to combat female genital mutilation (FGM) and force-feeding within schools across four Mauritanian regions (Gorgol, Brakna, Guidimakha, and Nouakchott). These committees, comprised of students under the supervision of teachers and ADFM members, will undergo training on FGM and force-feeding prevention to equip them with the knowledge and skills needed to raise awareness among their peers. The project aims to enhance the commitment of students, both girls and boys, in the fight against FGM and force-feeding while increasing the number of students informed about these issues.

To support the school committees, ADFM plans to develop two comprehensive awareness workshops for the 12 schools. These workshops will be complemented by awareness tools such as posters, preparation workbooks, an awareness kit, and a checklist, ensuring effective and sustainable knowledge transfer. In the second year of the project, ADFM will visit the 12 schools to conduct capacity-building workshops and assess the awareness efforts of the established school committees. The project seeks to encourage the involvement of young people, both girls and boys, recognizing that school interventions represent an effective means of transforming cultural and social norms related to gender.

Activities are scheduled to start in mid-February 2024 within schools in the Nouakchott region. We will add content to this page as the project progresses.
